Now that all the Easter eggs have been gobbled up it is time to think about getting healthy for the spring and summer season. Eat more fruit and veggies, dust off the bike and hit the road, get active and get on top of your game.

Also, start drinking kombucha, this fermented tea drink reportedly helps with detoxing your body, jump starting weight loss, increasing your energy and aiding in digestion. We sell a number of varieties at the store but in this post we thought maybe we’d look into how to make it at home.

Kombucha has a lot in common with sourdough bread in that they both need a starter or mother in order to develop properly. When making kombucha the starter is called a scoby, this stands for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. You can order one online to get started or you can make your own at home. This is a great article on how to grow your own. Now a scoby is kind of gross but it is necessary if you’re going to make proper kombucha. Once you’ve got a scoby you can get started. There are so many great recipes to be found, you’ll never tire of the many different flavours and variations you can create. Here are excellent and very thorough step by step instructions for making a batch of kombucha.

Kombucha is essentially a fermented tea drink, usually made with green tea, the most basic recipe calls for green tea, sugar, water and the scoby. Green tea is quite high in caffeine, if you want a caffeine-free kombucha try this recipe for making it with rooibos tea. Here’s a wonderful recipe for Ginger Kombucha that is perfect for this time of year when nasty colds are still going around.

One of the best kombucha recipes I’ve found is one you make after you’ve made a batch of kombucha, you then mix it with chia seeds for a Chia Seed Kombucha Energy Drink. This is the perfect concoction to drink before you hit the gym or go for a jog, it puts your body into high gear.

Spring is here and it’s time to get out of the house and enjoy the world again!
