The Apron Strings archive of stories and recipes about your ‘foremoms’ and food is growing everyday. This is the latest story submitted by Sarah Anderson as part of the Apron Strings contest that’s ongoing until Father’s Day.
When I was four and in kindergarten, we did a fire safety class. It was the end of the day, so all the parents had trooped in ready to pick up their darling little’uns and were standing at the back of the room. We’d gone through fire drills and how not to play with matches and were now learning what to do when we saw smoke. Our teacher looked at us all and asked us when did we see smoke. I raised my hand and being the shyest girl in class who rarely spoke my teacher immediately picked me.
“Well Sarah, when do you see smoke?”
“When mommy cooks.”
