We’ve been very lucky at Fiesta Farms to have so many great friends in the community. We have wonderful staff members and customers who appreciate what we do, but we also have journalists, chefs and activists who have been generous enough to sit down and write for us.
Every year we commence our Apron Strings project in the spring, we shoot videos with granny’s and their families cooking and we publish essays about mom or grandma, how they cooked and fed us and made a house a home.
This year we were lucky enough to have Kristina Groeger, pastry chef at the Ritz Carlton writing about her boyfriend’s French Canadian grandmother Claire. The CBC’s Mary Weins wrote about her childhood on the Prairies and her mother’s delicious Saskatoon Berry Pie, while food blogger David Ort reminisced about his mother’s Holiday Cookies.
We also enjoyed some writing about mothers who didn’t cook so well but built strong family connections to the kitchen and mealtime regardless, like the piece by food policy analyst and writer Wayne Roberts about his mother Dorothy and another by newspaper editor Vicki Bell about how much her mother disliked cooking but made the kitchen the centre of the home regardless.
Sometimes a dessert can build a bridge over borders, Sustain Ontario‘s Executive Director Ravenna Nuaimy-Barker wrote about the effect Nanaimo Bars made by her Grandma Barker had on her American family and may have even been her reason for moving to Canada!
