Fire Up Your Brain

We all know the havoc that poor food and drink choices wreak upon the mind and body. Today we have a look at smart food choices that will go directly to your head, putting a spring in your step and a gleam in your eye.

It has long been known that fish is “brain food” on account of its high levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Here are a few other choices to give your head a leg up.

Wilf Brimley was right. Eat your damn oatmeal. The cholesterol reducing grain will lower your blood pressure and is believed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s as well as encouraging your ability to concentrate by releasing serotonin. Throw some blueberries on your porridge to chase away the blues; tests have shown the antioxidants in blueberries lessen depression and help improve memory.

Coffee can get a bum rap on account of the cream and sugar, but a cup or two will increase alertness and concentration. Eggs too can be consumed in moderation as a single boiled egg provides you with half your daily requirement of the B vitamin choline.

Don’t skip lunch. Opt for lean protein, whole-grain or sprouted-grains bread containing complex carbohydrates and fruit. Keep things flowing with as much water as you can handle. Remember to drink water throughout the day, not just when you’re thirsty; the thirst reflex is nature’s way of telling you that you are, in fact, dehydrated. Stay away from sugary drinks which will lead to a burst of fake energy and an inevitable crash.

For supper you will want some variety. Keep the skins on when you eat your potatoes and yams. Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin B6 .Eat a green veg like broccoli or cabbage to boost your cognitive ability.

You don’t need meat or fish with every meal. Take it easy on the stuff, we eat too much of it anyway. Do your brain and body a favour by going veg for a day, it’s not going to kill you. And when you do eat meat, all that smart food you had earlier in the day will keep you away from the Big Macs. When you do opt for meat or fish, choose ethically/sustainable raised and sourced and do the same with vegetables. It is not a smart choice to screw the planet that feeds you.
