Community Calendar – September 2011

Construction has been completed on Roncesvalles for some time now, so for those of you that have been leery of heading over to one of Toronto’s most colourful neighbourhoods, this weekend would be the perfect time to check it out. Today marks the opening day of the Roncesvalles Polish Festival, now celebrating its sixth year.

This is the largest Polish Festival in North America, and each year it keeps growing. Organizers are expecting upwards of 200,000 visitors over the next three days, with activities from Dundas Street to Queen offering plenty of excitement.

Long known as the go-to place in the city for fresh house made kielbasa, pierogies, bigos and packzi, the street will be humming with polkas, military bands, dance troupes and singers.

Roncesvalles is also blessed with a wide range of culturally diverse shops, bookstores bakeries, patios and restaurants which will be open for you to step into and sample raw oysters, sushi, South Asian cuisine, or an ice cream cone.

But the big draw this weekend is celebrating all things Polish. The famous Revue Cinema will be screening Krzysztof Kieslowski’s trilogy, “Blue” White” and “Red”. Expect to be caught up in a Krakowiak whirlwind, and hang onto your pigtails!

Coming up next weekend is Ontario’s finest culinary event, Savour Stratford Culinary Festival. Wine tastings, beer tastings, whiskey tastings, knife skills classes, charcuterie classes, Ribs in the Square, BBQ, Blues & Brews….This year the Savour Stratford team has an amazing lineup and are bringing in Chuck Hughes, Iron Chef champ and host of Chuck’s Day Off, as well as Connie De Sousa, Top Chef Canada finalist to participate in the weekend’s festivities.

A picturesque town, over 300 vendors, Food Network celebs! What more could you ask for?

I know, a lift right? Stratford isn’t exactly on the Bloor line, so it takes bit of effort to get there. Thankfully the team thought of that and team up with Culinary Adventure Company to organize a motor coach from Union Station. It will provide transportation to and from the festival, leaving on Saturday, Sept. 24th. Tickets are $25 +tax per person and include a complimentary breakfast on the road. Book your seat here.
