Family Day Survival Guide

A lot of stores will be closed for Family Day tomorrow, including ours, so we thought we’d put up a post today to give you some ideas for how to finish up your long weekend. This way you can stock up on what you need today and have a fun, stress-free day tomorrow.

February is coming to a close, and while March is never really spring-y, it still sort of feels like winter is on his way out. That being said, we should all embrace what little bit of winter we’ve got left and get outside. Unfortunately there is barely any snow on the ground but there is lots of ice — at the skating rinks around the city.

We have more than forty rinks in Toronto, get out there and try one. We especially recommend the Brickworks,

  1. If you have young children — the meandering path of ice discourages wannabe NHL stars and speed demons.
  2. If you’re on a budget — skate rentals are PWYC.
  3. If you care about food — Chocosol hot chocolate, Rowe Farms all beef steamies, Tiffinday vegan Indian snacks
  4. And location — this rink is a gem at the beautiful, historic Brickworks location.

After all that healthful exercise in the frigid air it would be nice to come home to something lovely and warm for dinner. We’ve got you covered. This year we’ve spent a lot of time posting about braising, roasting and the use of crock pots. You could make baked beans and molasses bread, or a textbook perfect roast beef with gravy and Yorkshire pudding, or hearty oxtail soup served with a mug of dark winter beer.

You could make elk osso bucco, saving the trimmings for an elk tartar to serve as an appetizer, or go vegetarian and try a luscious pumpkin soup followed by a cranberry maple cake for dessert.

Whatever you choose to do have a wonderful long weekend filled with family, fun and really good food. Happy Family Day!
