A Healthy & Safe Alternative To Peanut Butter

School is almost out and if you have kids trotting off to summer school or summer camps, you know that packing lunches and care packages can be a challenge, especially with food restrictions and allergies. Indeed, due to the serious allergic reactions many have to completely avoid peanut butter and other nut products, many summer camps and schools have instituted an out and out ban on products like peanut butter, making healthy choices a little more complicated.

I have always been a little skeptical of  “replacement” products or substitutes. Chicory instead of coffee? Bleah. Carob, despite the earnest promises of hippies everywhere, is a poor substitute for chocolate. And so on.

But replacing peanut butter for a delicious understudy is not only a matter of taste, it is a matter of life and death for some, and in many cases you have no choice. Continue »
