Dinner with Laura Calder

What do you look for in a cookbook? If you’re like me, you want a collection of recipes that reflect a consistent theme, are not overly intimidating, instructions that are direct- inspiring a feeling of confidence- and yet still challenge. The narrative has to be approachable and entertaining, setting a tone that makes you wish you could spend some time with the author, cooking in the kitchen, sharing some stories over a glass of wine while preparing something delicious. Above all, the cookbook should make you want to cook, eat, and share your efforts with people you love. Continue »

Very Special Pancakes

Adrian Doran is a graphic designer and art director who is a big fan of brunch. As our guest blogger today he will share one of his favourite brunch recipes with you. Instead of going out for brunch this weekend, why not get inspired by Adrian’s recipe and do brunch at home?

Suzanne enjoys some of Adrian’s blueberry pancakes in her pj’s

Here’s a sugar- and gluten-free, low-carb pancake recipe, inspired by my fab girlfriend Suzanne. She has Type 1 Diabetes which is hereditary – sometimes called juvenile Diabetes, and is not lifestyle-based, like Type 2. She controls her metabolism’s sugar level with a low-carb diet, insulin and exercise. So: sugar, starch (potatoes, pasta, flour) and fruit are out; berries, dairy and nuts are in. This means cooking most comfort foods can be difficult, but thankfully we still have pancakes. It’s a Potato Party!

who doesn't love a potato party!

who doesn’t love a potato party!

Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Festivus and even that old chestnut Christmas, are upon us this month and that means one thing to a lot of people. Drinking! While holiday traditions may vary from house to house, with a menorah here and a Christmas tree there, you can usually count on a fully stocked bar.

Mimosas with a leisurely brunch, a martini after a hectic day at the mall, or a festive punch at the office party, we probably drink more at this time of year than any other, so we should put as much thought and care into our cocktails as we do with the holiday bird.

The best thing a potato ever did for the world was to ferment and get us all tipsy.

Vodka is definitely the highest form a potato can take and since we’re all about Spud Love this season, we’re going to honour it.

Here are some vodka cocktail recipes, by bartender Dave Elliott, that are perfect for the upcoming holidays. Why are they perfect? Because they are simple to make, beautiful to look at and a few sips will give you a lovely glow. Continue »

gluten-free Wild Wood Veggie Burgers with Shiitake- one of the best I’ve had

It may be snowing in Stratford today but we’re still enjoying sunshine and clear skies in Toronto. I’m tired of braising everything, I want something light and meatless. I want a burger and a salad. After shopping at Fiesta Farms yesterday, I picked up these gluten free burger buns and a new veggie burger I want to try out. There’s also some unpasteurized clover honey from Wild Country over in Guelph, I know I want to use that in the salad. A Cortland apple, some napa cabbage and organic, heirloom New Farm carrots, here goes. click here to read more
