The beautiful bombolone – think a jelly doughnut, but with more heft – is a perfect bombshell of a pastry. Often stuffed with vanilla custard or nutella, rolled in sugar and topped with a dot of the filling, like a little teaser on top, these delicious treats are an Italian specialty. Not to be confused with sufganiyot or zeppole, canoli or sfogliatella – the bombolone, and it’s diminutive form, the adorable bomboloni, will finally get the recognition it deserves.
