And the Oscar goes to Chocolate Nut Torte

I have a friend coming over to watch the Oscars on Sunday who is gluten intolerant. I have a great snack plate planned, heavy on the fruit, cheeses and nuts, but really am craving a rich, chocolate cake to serve in the latter stages of the awards; something simple, quick and easy to make, but still divine and decadent. Luckily I have just the answer, an amazing chocolate cake based on Laura Calder’s recipe for Picnic Chocolate Cake that appears in her wonderful cookbook, Paris Express. Continue »

Chestnut flour is a great ingredient to have in your pantry; it can be used in a variety of dishes, both sweet and savoury, and its characteristic deep nut flavour adds a little richness to everything from cakes, cookies and crepes to stews and soups. It is also gluten free, so it is a good choice for those who are looking to eat gluten-free without sacrificing flavour. Continue »

So when a product comes along with the name “Summer Fresh” we take notice; there are two things we like about that name!

Recognizing a need to make fresh, gourmet salads available in supermarkets, Susan Niczowski started her business with her mother in 1991 in Woodbridge, Ontario and hasn’t looked back; by 2012 Summer Fresh Salads was raking in a hundred million a year and had become Canada’s leading brand of fresh prepared foods like hummus, dips and salads, and now has a library of over 2,000 products distributed all across North America. Get Your Whole Grains – By the Glass

Bread_and_grains

You don’t need to eat a loaf of bread every day just to load up on whole grains. We’ve found an easier way!

We’ve written about alternatives to cow’s milk in the past, and are always excited to try new beverages that reduce reliance on the dairy industry. Substituting cow’s milk for nut milk, or other dairy-free alternative, even for a short period is a good way to partake in a vegan or vegetarian experience while cutting out a few calories as well. Variety is one of the elements that makes one’s diet stimulating, healthy and interesting and it is always fun to mix things up a bit, to try new tastes without sacrificing flavor or compromising nutrition while purchasing items that are ethically sourced, sustainable and good for the environment. It is also a bonus when we are able to source products manufactured in our own country, made with locally grown produce.  Continue »
