Our Proud Producers- Cracked Coconut

Here is our interview with Alex Longo, the woman behind Cracked Coconut, a sweet vegan spread that is a brand new addition to our shelves at the store. Alex tells us about how she became a food producer and what products she plans to create next.

What is your background and how did you end up doing what you do now?

I have been battling Crohn’s disease since I was seventeen years old. In my first year of university, I was hospitalized for nine days from an unforeseen illness caused by my Crohn’s prevention medications that almost lead to death. That was my breaking point; I knew there had to be another way to live my life pain- and symptom-free. I immersed myself in studies related to quality nutrition, packaged food systems and ingredient sourcing as well as reading many cook books and blogs about transitioning to a whole food diet. New Line of Hot Sauces From No7

Toronto based hot sauce company, No7, is launching a new line of flavours and they’ll be sampling them at the store later this month (March 15-16th to be precise, follow them on twitter if you want a reminder.). We emailed the husband and wife team of Carlos Flores and Sandra DaSilva to get the scoop on what hot new tastes we can expect.

Sandra told me, “Carlos had discovered a passion for creating and experimenting in his mom’s kitchen. At a very young age he quickly took over and began making anything from simple meals to complex Mexican dishes. What was always served with every meal at the table was his family recipe for hot sauce. After making it here in Toronto for friends and clients he developed No 7 hot sauce.” Continue »



Our Proud Producers: Marinelli Pasta Sauce

We carry some great products in the store and we like to feature them in this “Our Proud Producers” series. Here allow us to introduce you to Marinelli Pasta Sauce.

The thing about pasta sauce is it’s hard to buy a store-bought sauce that tastes as good as homemade, with locally grown ingredients, devoid of added sugars and preservatives. The reasons for this are largely economic; it costs more to produce a superior product. Continue »
