Here we are in the middle of February, in the season where nothing is growing outdoors, our root cellars are stodgy with potatoes and turnips and winter squash and summer seems both a long time ago and a long time away. So when a product comes along with the name “Summer Fresh” we take notice; there are two things we like about that name!

Recognizing a need to make fresh, gourmet salads available in supermarkets, Susan Niczowski started her business with her mother in 1991 in Woodbridge, Ontario and hasn’t looked back; by 2012 Summer Fresh Salads was raking in a hundred million a year and had become Canada’s leading brand of fresh prepared foods like hummus, dips and salads, and now has a library of over 2,000 products distributed all across North America. Well the new year is finally upon us, and many of us are still reeling from the past couple weeks of gastronomic excess, and are resolute in our endeavours to get back on track. The list of resolutions may look familiar; after all, New Year’s Day is its own version of Groundhog Day. Haven’t we made these promises before? Meatless Monday: Veggie Burgers

Celebrate Meatless Monday with a delicious homemade veggie burger

No doubt about about it, this spring is a long time coming. For many of us, one of the rituals associated with spring is firing up the grill for the first charcoal grilled burger of the season. But for those of us that can’t wait, a homemade burger cooked indoors is the next best thing, and if you are cooking indoors, a veggie burger is a nice change of pace; even if you are not vegetarian or vegan, going meatless for a dinner now and then is a delicious and healthy option, and a fabulous meatless burger cooked to perfection indoors, and served on a toasted bun with all your favourite fixin’s will make you forget all about this wet blanket of a season. Detox Before New Year’s Eve

This is the time of year when we are most susceptible to colds and flu. During the holidays we are stressed, drinking too much, eating too much and not enough of it green or healthy foods, and generally just being brats. Add in the cold weather and you’ve got a perfect recipe for nasty cold. The last thing we want is to be standing at the big New Year’s Eve bash with a runny nose and pounding headache. Continue »
