Why We Love Edible Toronto

Promoting local food and farming based initiatives, Edible Toronto proudly gives a shout-out to all the good work, good people and good things going on in our area that help to create and sustain jobs, bolster the economy and in general raise awareness of the amazing agri-based community we are so lucky to have.

Gail Gordon Oliver, the owner, editor and publisher of Edible Toronto launched the magazine in 2007, and it is now going stronger than ever. “Gail has received wonderful feedback since launching Edible Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe in September 2007, and is extremely proud that just seven months later, the magazine won an Environmental Award of Excellence in the City of Toronto’s 2008 Green Toronto Awards. In the spring of 2009, Gail was inducted as a Fellow of the Ontario Hostelry Institute. The following year, the magazine was a finalist in Le Cordon Bleu’s World Food Media Awards. And in 2011 Edible Toronto, along with its sister publications under the Edible Communities banner, were awarded the 2011 Publication of the Year Award by the James Beard Foundation.”- Edibletoronto.com summer_2012_cover


As it is a quarterly, the magazine focuses naturally on the four seasons. Take the spring issue, for example, it is out now and the pages are filled with foraging and gardening, spring cleaning and a listing of the local produce available now. There are recipes for devilled eggs, sorrel soup, spring pea and radish salad, and pan-roasted asparagus with shallots and lemon. Come to think of it, that sounds like a perfect spring dinner party menu.

The magazine itself is beautiful and bright, with outstanding articles and beautiful photography, printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper stock using the most advanced and environmentally friendly Warren’s Waterless Printing Process.  Even the advertising is interesting and relevant. You will not see adds for Kraft Dinner or Pringles in ET, more likely they will be ads from our friends, fellow markets, and colleagues informing us all of locally sourced, sustainable foodstuffs, organic suppliers, and ethical farms that maybe are not advertised in major money-crunching media.
