February has set in and like a grumpy old relative refusing to leave anytime soon. But there are lots of happenings in and around Toronto in February that should renew your enthusiasm and get you out and about. Here are just a few food related activities that are of interest to us this week, starting with today!

The Underground Chef’s Cartel-Monday February 9

“The Underground Chef Cartel is a coalition of like-minded individuals whose primary purpose is to showcase and promote underground chefs”. Tonight you can trot over to Teppan Kenta to witness two chefs square off mano a mano  showing off the skills that are destined to make them the next big thing in the culinary world. Chefs Deron Engbers and Eric Wood will duke it out in the first of a series of battles, producing two dishes utilizing a secret ingredient that will be revealed to all just minutes before the battle begins. The dishes will be judged by three Toronto chefs and food bloggers, with a member of the audience (you?) selected as a fourth judge. The event begins at 8 pm, but doors open at 6 pm, and admission also entitles guests to beer from Great Lakes Brewing Co, or sake, as well as appetizers and of course a chance to be one of the judges.

Tickets can be purchased at the door only for $25

Last Call for Winterlicious

Winterlicious, the annual fortnight that offers amazing prix fixe menus for Toronto diners draws to a close on Thursday, so if you have not taken advantage of this event this week is the time to do it. Here’s a list of some of Toronto’s favourite joints that are participating.

Bees & HoneyFrom Flower to Table-Feb 10

The Globe Bistro’s chef Dan Sanders will be serving a five-course menu featuring local ingredients and honey made from Globe’s very own bees! Krystina Roman, beekeeper extraordinaire from Rosewood estates will be discussing beekeeping in Ontario and the plight of the honeybee. You can also catch Roman tonight at the Drake One Fifty, where, from 5-7pm, she’ll be pouring a complimentary cocktail featuring Rosewood Estates mead.

Beerworking!-Feb 12

We hate to put beer and “working” together in the same sentence, let alone the same word, but this this is worth it. Hosted by Crystal Luxmore a certified cicerone (beer sommelier) this fun mixer is a great way to meet with like-minded beer enthusiasts to swap information, stories, and suds. Twenty Camden Street, upstairs, and tickets can be purchased here.

Valentines Day

It’s this week,  Saturday! So if you are the type who should be reminded of that fact, mark it on your calendar right now, and check back with us on Friday for a list of fun activities and special events that will make you forget all about Friday the 13th.
