Toronto’s Coconut Festival Is This Weekend

This coming Sunday, August 23, David Pecaut Square will be rockin’ and rollin’ with coconuts. Produced by Coconut Festival Canada, the second annual Coconut Festival promises to reveal everything you always wanted to know about coconuts but were afraid to ask; the multitude of culinary uses as well as the myriad of health benefits that this most remarkable fruit (or more technically, “drupe”) possesses.

“Our goal is to educate consumers about the simplicity of natural lifestyle and how coconuts can contribute to that in your day-to-day healthy living, preventing sickness and diseases,” says founder Anne Josef.

No doubt about it, coconuts are hotter than ever. Today’s coconut is a far cry from the bag of heavily sweetened, shredded coconut that was in your mother’s cupboard, and we at Fiesta Farms have long been fans of coconut milk for cooking, cracked coconutcoconut oil  and coconut milk beverages. A truly amazing plant, the coconut palm is even a remarkable source of sugar, producing a wholesome, organic and sustainable alternative to traditional sweeteners.

Sunday’s festival is free to attend, and features chefs and food vendors offering delicious baked goodies, and naturopathic doctors, authors, health lecturers, farmers, musicians and local businesses promoting health and wellness through the use of coconuts. Guest speakers will be on hand discussing coconut therapy, pregnancy, chiropractic, raising children naturally. One of the featured speakers is Sunita Mohan, (Host of Health Matters Rogers cable 10) speaking about the Good Fats and the Bad Fats; good fats protect your heart, support overall health and help you lose weight. In fact, good fats such as omega-3 fats, are essential to physical and emotional health.

Far from a dull day at a lecture hall. the festival promises to be fun for the whole family, with children’s games, coconut bowling contests, hula contests, free yoga, acro yoga, and cultural performers to keep everyone busy. In addition, the first five hundred attendees will receive complimentary goodie bags!
