Summertime and the living is easy. And in the summertime, cooking should be easy too. Happily for all of us, Toronto chef, writer and television personality Voula Halliday has presented us with a wonderful little gem of a cookbook to make it so. Just when you’re thinking your only recourse is to light the coals or phone for take-out, along comes Eat At Home.

This labour of love is a project that Ms Halliday is completing using Kickstarter as a first edition pre-order campaign. Clicking on that link will get you well on your way to receiving your own copy even before it’s readily available on book store shelves! And in a philanthropic, giving-back vein, Voula is donating proceeds from every book sold to the Nutrition Program at Dundas Junior Public School, the inner-city school in Toronto, ON, where she used to be chef.

In her introduction to the book Voula admits that, “I want to do it all!” and indeed, with this book she has succeeded. Starting off with a chapter devoted to essential items in the pantry, she next shares her secret “flavour fixes”; “little elves in my kitchen that help me boost the flavour of anything and everything…” These little elves are packing a variety of global flavours, spice blends and pastes, salsas, chutneys and marinades.

Then come the recipes, breakfast, sides, soups, salads, mains and baked goods and treats, straightforward, uncomplicated but uncompromising; good food done right, and done right at home. That’s where the heart is, after all, and this smart and lively cookbook will fit right in. Just be sure to save room for dessert!
