Spider plant leaves add a contemporary “spill” to this simple flower arrangement.
A highlight this winter week was this simple flower arrangement I made of orange roses and green button chrysanthemums.With floral design, as well as flower planters and containers, the general idea is to “thrill, fill and spill”. It’s a good design rule to follow. The thrill is the centrepiece: here it’s the flowers in contrasting colours, the fill is the greenery filler, and the spill is something that cascades down the side of the vessel. A well-designed arrangement should have all three of these to be working at its best aesthetically. With one type of filler greenery to go with the flowers, it looked…. okay. Sadly, I didn’t have anything for the “spill’. Then, I had an idea. My huge, healthy spider plant came to the rescue. I cut and added a couple of long, strappy spider plant leaves to spill over the sides of the vase, and my arrangement came alive. I like the contemporary feel of the green stripe on the spider plant leaves. Scathingly brilliant if I do say so myself.
