Do you remember your first oyster? Was it a dare? Honestly it is no easy task to slurp back a crazy looking raw mollusk for the first time. Now how about getting a kid to do the same? That’s a tall order, but if you can pull it off? What a triumph!
Our journey begins with The Kitchenista. We’ve written about her here before, when we shared her seminal treatise on why you should never boil ribs. Angela Davis, the chef behind the Kitchenista is a rare find in the ocean of recipe and content creators online; a genuine genius home cook. She’s back with a some legit tips on how to get your child to not only eat oysters, but become a fully fledged oyster enthusiast.
“Her first taste of oyster was around 3 or 4. We started with just sipping oyster liquor”, reads Davis’ post that accompanies a video of her daughter trying oysters over the years. She shares tips on how she encouraged her child to eat new things as she grew. From “no kids menus at restaurants” to “letting her try things over and over again so long as it’s her choice!”
Check out the post in its entirety here and see a little kid grow into an oyster enthusiast.
As for getting kids to eat anything, let alone oysters, we know that sometimes it can feel impossible. “This is a marathon, not a sprint,” says Katie Morford, R.D., author of Mom’s Kitchen Handbook. But the more adventurous you make it the more options you give them for new foods, the more chances they’ll have to expand their palates early. A new cookbook just landed that might give you a leg up in that regard.
We’ll have a recipe from Chef Cory Vitiello and Chris John’s Dad In The Kitchen for you next week. Be sure to check back in. And have fun shucking oysters for the fam this weekend. Your kids just might surprise you.
